Dhaka, 25 March: UNIC Dhaka, ASA University Bangladesh and Daffodil Int’l University (DIU) jointly commemorated the Int’l Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2014 on 25 March 2014 at ASA University auditorium. The commemoration included Seminar, Candle Lighting, Poetry Recitation, Poster Exhibition and Drama. Prof Shah Alam, Member, Law Commission, Bangladesh was the chief guest while Prof Dalem Chandra Barman, Vice Chancellor of ASA University presided over the function. Mijanur Rahaman Raju, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication of DIU, Kazi Ali Reza, Chairman of CIS,B, M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge, UNIC Dhaka and poet Kazi Rozi, MP spoke as special guests. Renowned poets of the country Kazi Rozi, Shihab Sarkar, Muhammad Samad, Aslam Sani and Prakitoj Shamim Rumi Titon recited human rights poems. Candle lighting was organized in memory of the slave-trade victims. A human rights drama was also staged by ‘All Star Daffodils’ – a theatre group of Daffodil Int’l University. A day long poster exhibition was also arranged to mark the Day. More than 200 teacher and student participated in the programme.

UN Quiz Contest and Information Literacy Training
21 March 2014: In order to develop the capacity of young generation, UNIC Dhaka and Centre for Information Studies Bangladesh jointly organized a two-day long Information Literacy Training programme and UN Quiz Contest during 20-21 March 2014 at Anjana Model High School in Savar. UNIC OIC M. Moniruzzaman spoke in the inaugural session as special guest while Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was the Chief Guest. In the training programme, the resource persons were Dhaka University professors, EX UNIC Chief, a senior journalist and UNIC OIC. There was a presentation on UN activities worldwide. Prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd position) were given to the quiz winners. Certificates were awarded among all the participants in concluding ceremony, where school Headmaster and local leaders were present. About 50 students were in attendance.
“Equality for women means progress for all” – Seminar and Open Speech Contest on Int’l Women’s Day, 9 March 2014
Dhaka, 9 March: In order to create awareness among the young people about achieving of women equalty, UNIC Dhaka, United Nations Youth and Student Association Bangladesh (UNYSAB) and Dhaka University Model United Nations Association jointly organized a discussion and extemporary speech contest on Int’l Women’s Day on 9 March 2014 at UNIC library. Partnerships Officer of UNRC Office Ms Danielle Naranzilla was the chief guest while UNIC KMO M. Moniruzzaman moderated the programme. He delivered an introductory speech and read-out UN SG’s translated Bangla Message on the Day. Mr. Mamun Mia President of UNYSAB spoke on the occasion as a special guest. The contestants focused on the issues of domestic violence, women’s equality, women’s empowerment and progress for all. A panel of judges selected best four speakers. Prizes were distributed among the winners. Roses were given to all the participants, guests and supporting staff as a souvenir of Int’l Women’s Day.
Content Writing Workshop’ for the Young Contributors
Dhaka, 27 February: UNIC Dhaka and UNV jointly organized a ‘Content Writing Workshop’ for the young contributors. The workshop was held as an outcome of UN Youth Theme Group’s decision to publish a bi-lingual newsletter by the youngsters. The UN Inter-agency Youth Theme Group, lead by UNFPA, was formed in Bangladesh in line with Youth agenda – one of the priorities of UN Secretary-General. UNIC, UNV, UNFPA and UNICEF took lead for publishing a Youth Newsletter by the youth. Mr Mainul Alam, a senior journalist of Daily Ittefaq and President of Diplomatic correspondents Association of Bangladesh worked as a resource person in the workshop. The young participants were actively participated in the workshop. The 1st issue of the newsletter will focus on women empowerment to mark the Int’l Women’s Day. M. Moniruzzaman of UNIC Dhaka and Merel Fuchs of UNV have moderated the session.
