Nelson Mandela International Day Commemorated in Dhaka

01 Dhaka, Monday, 18 July 2016: In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, UNIC Dhaka and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) jointly organized a Poster Exhibition, Video show and Interactive Discussion Programme at the UNIC Library. Edward Rees, Peace & Development Adviser of UN Resident Coordinators Office, Pem Chuki Wangdi, Head of the UNRC Office and Aaqib Md Shatil, Representative of UNYSAB were present and spoke at the event. M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the events. Students from different universities took part in the open discussion and Q/A session to share their views and they pledged to work to create a positive impact in the world which Mandela envisioned. The opening session of the programme began with a Nelson Mandela Photo Exhibition followed by a video show and reading out of UN Secretary General’s Message. The UNSG’s Message on the Day and SDGs promotional materials (Bangla) were distributed among the participants.

International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust: Discussion and poster exhibition

Holocaust Day event by UNIC Dhaka, Group PhotoDhaka, 27 January 2016: In observance of International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, UNIC Dhaka organized a discussion seminar and poster exhibition at UNIC office on 27 January 2016. The students of Dhaka University and ASA University took part in the events and expressed their solidarity for the holocaust victims during Second World War. The poster exhibition was launched by Mika Kanervavuori, Human Rights Advisor, UNRC Office, who spoke on the occasion as chief guest. UNIC officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the session. The discussants were Dr. Sayma Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of International Relations, Dhaka University, Abu Hena Mustofa Kamal, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, ASA University. The speakers said that any kind of genocide is deplorable, the painful days of Bangladesh liberation war was also highlighted in the discussion. They urged to respect diversity and tolerance in the society. The participants were provided with UNSG’s massage and UN publications.

Commemoration of International Holocaust Day 2015

01Dhaka, 27 January 2015: In marking the International Day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, UNIC Dhaka, BRAC University Monon Club and Hope Multimedia jointly organized a Discussion workshop, Poster Exhibition, Film Show and Candle Lighting at UNIC Library on 27 January 2015. The young participants of BRAC University Monon Club took part in the events and expressed their solidarity for the holocaust victims during Second World War. Two Films: Tenth Anniversary of  the Holocaust programme; and Liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau were screened before the university students. A day-long poster exhibition of holocaust victim was also launched at UNIC library.  Mika Kanervavuori, Human Rights Advisor of UNRC Office spoke on the occasion as chief guest while UNIC officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the event. Among others, Abdullah Ibne Hosssain Sakin, President of BRAC University Monon Club and Artist Santu Saha, Executive Director of Hope Multimedia spoke on the occasion. The speakers and a number of participants have mentioned that any kind of genocide is deplorable, the painful days of Bangladesh liberation war was also focused in the discussion and they urged to respect diversity and tolerance in the society. A set of UN publications including UN Secretary-General’s message were distributed among all participants.

Commemoration of 20th Anniversary of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide: Seminar, Poetry Recitation, Drama, Candle lighting and Poster Exhibition, 7 April 2014

genocideDhaka, 7 April: UNIC Dhaka and University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) with the cooperation of Daffodil Int’l University commemorated the 20th Anniversary of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide on 7 April at UITS auditorium. The observance included seminar, poetry recitation, drama candlae lighting and poster exhibition. The speakers said genocide destroys the humanity. Poet Kazi Rozi, MP was the chief guest while the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UITS Dr. K M Saiful Islam Khan presided over the function. UN expert and Chairman of CIS, B Kazi Ali Reza delivered a speech as guest of honour while M. Moniruzzaman OIC of UNIC Dhaka spoke as special guest and read-out the UN Secretary General’s message on the Day. Lt Col (Retd) AFM Khairul Basher, who served in Rwanda Peacekeeping Mission from Bangladesh Army, shared his practical working experience in Rwanda. Renowned poets of the country Poet Muhammad Samad (VC of UITS), Poet Kazi Rozi, MP, Poet Shihab Sarkar and Poet Aslam Sani recited poems on human rights. A candle lighting was organized in memory of the victims of Rwanda genocide. A human rights drama was performed by DIU theatre group – All Star Daffodils. A day long poster exhibition was also arranged to mark the Day.

Dhaka, 25 March: UNIC Dhaka, ASA University Bangladesh and Daffodil Int’l University (DIU) jointly commemorated the Int’l Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2014 on 25 March 2014 at ASA University auditorium. The commemoration included Seminar, Candle Lighting, Poetry Recitation, Poster Exhibition and Drama. Prof Shah Alam, Member, Law Commission, Bangladesh was the chief guest while Prof Dalem Chandra Barman, Vice Chancellor of ASA University presided over the function. Mijanur Rahaman Raju, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication of DIU, Kazi Ali Reza, Chairman of CIS,B, M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge, UNIC Dhaka and poet Kazi Rozi, MP spoke as special guests. Renowned poets of the country Kazi Rozi, Shihab Sarkar, Muhammad Samad, Aslam Sani and Prakitoj Shamim Rumi Titon recited human rights poems. Candle lighting was organized in memory of the slave-trade victims. A human rights drama was also staged by ‘All Star Daffodils’ – a theatre group of Daffodil Int’l University. A day long poster exhibition was also arranged to mark the Day. More than 200 teacher and student participated in the programme.
