TOGETHER Campaign in Manikgonj District

UNIC Dhaka and Manikgonj Government Mohila College jointly organized an interactive discussion seminar on Together campaign at the College Auditorium on 8 March 2017. Mr Mahmud Hassan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration, GoB graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Ms Rashida Ferdous, DC of Manikgonj district spoke as Guest of Honour. Among others Ms Monowara Sarker- Former Director of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, and Mr Bashiur Ahmed, Principal of the College spoke on the occasion. UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman delivered the key-note speech highlighting the background of Together campaign including GFMD Summit in Dhaka and Migration Summit in New York. DC of Manikgonj spoke about the development process and role of women in different sectors. More than one hundred participants of the college took part in the discussion programme. All the participants were provided with a Special Bangla Flyer on TOGETHER, published by UNIC Dhaka. A number of teachers and UNIC staff members were also present in the programme.

 

UN Day celebration at Dhaka University Campus: Workshop and Seminar organized

01Dhaka, 29 October 2016: In observance of United Nations Day, UNIC Dhaka jointly with Dhaka University Model United Nations Association (DUMUNA) and UN Youth and Student Association of Bangladdesh (UNYSAB) organized a a day-long workshop and Seminar at Dhaka University RC Majumber Hall on 29 September 2016. More than two hundred students from different educational institutions took part in the workshop and seminar. M. Moniruzzaman, UNIC Officer-in-Charge presented the key-note paper and Ms. Mosammat Shahanara Monica, Director (UN), Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke in the seminar as a special guest. Professor Dalem Chandra Barman, Former Vice Chancellor of ASA University and Dr Delwar Hossain, Professor of Dept of International Relations, Dhaka University and Kazi Ali Reza, Director (Communication), Dhaka Ahsania Mission spoke on the ocassion as resource persons. UNYSAB President Mamun Mia and DUMUNA President Wahid Siddique were also present in the seminar. The various procedures of Model UN Conference were discussed in the workshop while the importance and relevance of United Nations Day were focused in the seminar. A photo exhibition was also opened during the sessions. The copies of UN Secretary-General Message on the Day were distributed among all the participants.

Nelson Mandela International Day Commemorated in Dhaka

01 Dhaka, Monday, 18 July 2016: In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, UNIC Dhaka and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) jointly organized a Poster Exhibition, Video show and Interactive Discussion Programme at the UNIC Library. Edward Rees, Peace & Development Adviser of UN Resident Coordinators Office, Pem Chuki Wangdi, Head of the UNRC Office and Aaqib Md Shatil, Representative of UNYSAB were present and spoke at the event. M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the events. Students from different universities took part in the open discussion and Q/A session to share their views and they pledged to work to create a positive impact in the world which Mandela envisioned. The opening session of the programme began with a Nelson Mandela Photo Exhibition followed by a video show and reading out of UN Secretary General’s Message. The UNSG’s Message on the Day and SDGs promotional materials (Bangla) were distributed among the participants.

Celebration of International Day of Families 2016: Families, healthy lives and sustainable future

Untitled-1-minDhaka, 28 May 2016: In commemoration of the International Day of Families (15 May), UNIC Dhaka, College of Home Economics and Worldwide Family Love Movement (WWFLM) jointly organized a seminar on 28 May 2016 at College Auditorium. Ms Nasreen Begum, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Ms. Shamsun Nahar, Principal of Home Economics College presided over. The special guests were Mohammad Abu Sadek, Director, Housing and Building Research Institute and M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge, UNIC Dhaka. In his speech UNIC OIC focuses on the SDGs and their relation to families, healthy lives and sustainable future. Among others Freedom Fighter Ms Hajera Nazrul, Ms. Tajkera Khair, the Chairperson of WWFLM and Prof Nazma Begum spoke on the occasion. The UN Secretary-General’s message on the Day was read-out and SDGs Bangla post cards were distributed among the participants. More than 300 students and guests attended the event.

World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2016

wpfd2016World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. It is an opportunity to: celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence; and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. In 2016, World Press Freedom Day coincides with three important milestones: The 250th anniversary of the world’s first freedom of information law, covering both modern-day Sweden and Finland; The 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration of press freedom principles; The year 2016 is also the first year of the 15 year life-cycle of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Group picTo mark the Day UNESCO Dhaka Office organized a seminar  titled, ‘The State of Press Freedom in Bangladesh: Challenges and Way Forward’ at CIRDAP auditorium on 3 May 2016. UNESCO Representative Ms Beatrice Kaldun delivered the introductory speech while Chief Information Commissioner Prof Dr Md Golam Rahman Spoke as chief guest. The key-note paper was presented by Prof Dr Abu J M Shafiul Alam Bhaiyan. Among others Advocate Sultana Kamal and Toufique Imrose Khalidi spoke on the occasion. UNIC Officer-in-Charge was present in the seminar. Mass-line Media Centre (MMC) and ICS co-organized the event.

UNIC Dhaka Commemorates Rwanda Genocide Day: Candle lighting, Play, Poetry Recitation and Seminar

Photo: UNIC DhakaDhaka, 7 April 2016: UNIC Dhaka jointly with Daffodil International University (DIU) commemorated the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda on 7 April at DIU auditorium. In expressing solidarity to the victims of Rwanda genocide, the programme began with candle lighting. The observance also included seminar, poetry recitation and a short play. The speakers called the societies to raise voice against the act of genocide. They cited the history of liberation war of Bangladesh and paid tribute to the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for motherland.  Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Rahman, Chief Information Commissioner, Bangladesh spoke on the occasion as chief guest while VC of DIU Prof. Dr. Yusuf M. Islam presided over. Commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day 2016: Seminar and Cultural Performance

Dhaka, Saturday, 2 April 2016: In commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day, UNIC Dhaka jointly with Ananda Niketon European School (ANES) organized a Seminar and Cultural event at school meeting room on 2 April 2016. The key-note paper was presented by autistic expert and psychologist Ms Narsis Rahman while Chairperson of ANES Dr Mahmudul Hasan delivered introductory speech. They focused on various issues of autism disorders and have put emphasis on awareness programme. In his speech, M. Moniruzzaman, UNIC Officer-in-Charge urged the policy makers, voluntary organizations and business community to come forward to the process of mainstreaming autistic people. Ms Momtaz Begum of UNIC read-out UN Secretary-General Message on the Day while Ms Romela Murshed, Coordinator of ANES delivered vote of thanks. The autistic children of ANES inclusive school took part in dance and musical show. Students, parents, teachers and guests took part in the event.

Seminar on UN 70th Anniversary and SDGs at CUET

UN 70th Anniversary logo_English_CMYKChittagong, 15 June 2015: To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations and to sensatize the UN summits scheduled in 2015, UNIC Dhaka with the partnership of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Nippon Academy organized a seminar on 15 June at CUET auditorium. The Vice-Chancellor of CUET Prof Dr Jahangir Alam spoke on the ocassion as chief guest while the key-note paper was pressented by UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman. Among others, the Honorary Consul-General of Japan Embassy Mr. M. Nurul Islam, Pro Vice Chancellor and Registrar of CUET spoke in the seminar. Around one hundred students of CUET attended the seminar and few of them took part in Q/A session. 2015-Time-for-Global-Action_English-e1429068948937The event was mainly focused on September Summit in New York for shaping SDGs, July Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) in Addis Ababa and COP21 in Paris during Nov-Dec 2015. The objectives and impact of those summit were also discussed in the seminar. Issues like sustainable development, climate change in Bangladesh and how Bangladeshi young people can contribute in those matters, also came-up in the discussion. Another seminar on UN 70 and SDGs was organized at Nippon academy on 14 June 2015.

Protect Environment and Reduce Carbon Emission, Commitments made in World Environment Day Round-table

01Dhaka, 8 June 2015: In commemoration of World Environment Day, UNIC Dhaka with the partnership of UN Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh organized a round-table seminar on 8 June 2015 at UNIC Meeting Room. Mr. Mahmud Hasan, Joint Secretary, MoLWA of Bangladesh Government graced the seminar as chief guest. The MDGs and post-2015 development agenda were main focus in the discussion. Key-note papers were presented by Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development of UNDP and Zaki Uz Zaman, Head of UNIDO in Bangladesh. Mamun Mia, President of UNYSAB and journalist Mohiuddin Kawsar took part in the discussion. The participants made a number of commitments to protect environment and to reduce carbon emission. UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the round table under the banner of UN 70th Anniversary and 2015: time for Global Action. The participants include government officials, media, UN agency officials, and university students who took part in Q/A session. An UN Video was screened and Bangla translated message of UN Secretary-General’s was distributed among the participants.

Commemoration of International Day of Families

FD02Dhaka, 16 May 2015: In commemoration of the International Day of Families, UNIC Dhaka, Worldwide Family Love Movement (WWFLM), Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and Dhrubotara Social and Cultural Organization jointly organized a seminar on 16 May 2015 at DAM Auditorium in Dhaka. Mr Md Tariqul Islam, Secretary of Ministry of Social Welfare spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Dr. M. Ehsanur Rahman the Executive Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission presided over. The special guests were the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Public Administration and UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman. Among others, Ms. Tajkera Khair, the Chairperson of WWFLM and Mr Amia Prapan Chakraborty, the Executive Director of Dhrubotara spoke on the occasion. In their speech, the speakers focused on contemporary issues of family life and the role of family members in building a peaceful society. The UN Secretary-General’s message on the Day was readout. More than 100 persons form diffecrent sectors attended the event.
