Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping 2015

World Leaders gather in New York ahead of the Leaders' Summit, 28 September 2015

This year’s Leaders’ Summit was a historic moment for UN Peacekeeping with unprecedented levels of support coming from all regions of the globe.

On 28 September 2015, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. President Barack Obama joined nearly 50 heads of state and government representatives from around the world to announce significant new contributions to UN Peacekeeping.

Pledges amounted to more than 40,000 troops and police, as well as critical enablers including more than 40 helicopters, 22 engineering companies, 11 naval and riverine units, and 13 field hospitals. Continue reading

UN adopts new Global Goals, charting sustainable development for people and planet by 2030

UN Photo/Cia Pak25 September 2015 – The 193-Member United Nations General Assembly today formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with a set of bold new Global Goals, which Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed as a universal, integrated and transformative vision for a better world.

“The new agenda is a promise by leaders to all people everywhere. It is an agenda for people, to end poverty in all its forms – an agenda for the planet, our common home,” declared Mr. Ban as he opened the UN Sustainable Development Summit which kicked off today and wraps up Sunday. International Peace Day Observed in Dhaka University

Peace Day Rally in Dhaka UniversityDhaka, 20 September 2015: In celebration of the International Day of Peace, UNIC Dhaka, Gan-Sohagi Memorial Trust Fund and Department of Peace and Conflict Studies of Dhaka University (DU) jointly organized a Peace Rally in the university premises on 20th September 2015. Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University  attended the rally as a chief guest. Professor Dr. Nasreen Ahmed, Pro-VC of DU, Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Social Science, DU, Professor Dr. Dalem Chandra Barman, Vice-Chancellor of ASA University and Mr. M. Moniruzzaman Office-in-Charge, UNIC Dhaka also took part in the rally. Continue reading

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Message on Int’l Day of Peace, 21 September 2015

peaceday_bannerThis year’s International Day of Peace comes at a time of deadly violence and destabilizing conflicts around the world. Rather than succumbing to despair, we have a collective responsibility to demand an end to the brutality and impunity that prevail.

I call on all warring parties to lay down their weapons and observe a global ceasefire. To them I say: stop the killings and the destruction, and create space for lasting peace.

Although it may seem hopelessly distant, the dream of peace pulses in the lives of people everywhere. Continue reading

Press Conference: Under-Secretary-General for Field Support visits Bangladesh

Press Conf by USG for Field Support in DhakaDhaka, 15 September 2015: UNIC Dhaka and UNRC office jointly organized a press conference for Mr Atul Khare, the visiting UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, DFS on 15 September 2015 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka. The press encounter was organized prior to his departure from Dhaka. The senior journalists of major media outlets working Bangladesh took part in the press conference. Mr Khare in his statement praised the contribution of Bangladesh Government in peacekeeping efforts and appreciated the performance of Bangladeshi peacekeepers. In reply to a question Mr Khare mentioned that Bangladesh will get more senior positions in peace missions. The press conference was moderated by UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman.

Mr Khare was on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh during 13-15 September 2015 by an invitation of Government of Bangladesh. UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Mr Robert Watkins accompanied USG during his visit in Bangladesh. The USG met Hon’ble PM, Hon’ble Foreign Minister, high officials and all stakeholders and discussed various issues relating to peace operations. He also visited Peace Keeping Training Institute in Rajendrapur – BIPSOT.

Model United Nations Conference held at Rajshahi University

RU MUNRajshahi, 7 September 2015: With the strategic partnership of UNIC Dhaka, UN Youth and Student Association Bangladesh (UNYSAB) organized a Model United Nations Conference in Rajshahi University during 4 to 7 September 2015. A total number of 410 delegates from different educational institutions took part in this event. The State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Shahriar Alam, MP graced the opening session as chief guest while Pro Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan and UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman spoke as special guests. Among others, Prof Sadequl Aferin Matin of Rajshahi University and UNYSAB President Mamun Mia spoke in the inaugural session. All the delegates were provided with UN publications.
