Dhaka, 5 January 2017: The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Dhaka with support of UNRC Office launched the World Economic & Social Survey 2016 at UN Meeting room. With the theme of ‘climate change resilience: an opportunity for reducing inequalities’, the report was presented by Dr. S. Nazrul Islam, Senior Economic Affairs officer, Development Policy Analysis Division, UN, New York. In addressing the specific challenge of building resilience to climate change, the Survey focuses on the population groups and communities that are disproportionately affected by climate hazards. It was discussed that, in absence of trans formative policies which coherently address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of development, building climate resilience will remain elusive and poverty and inequalities will worsen. Official remarks were followed by an open discussion and question and answer session. Mr. Mahmud Hassan, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Public Administration, GoB, spoke as chief guest while Ms. Kyoko Yokosuka, Deputy Country Director, UNDP was special guest. Event was well-attended, including Media, government officials, NGO representatives, women activists, youth leaders and civil society members. The event was conducted by UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman.
