UN Secretary-General’s Message for the International Day of Friendship – 30 July 2016

featured-image-indexPoverty, violence, human rights abuses and other major problems on the global agenda have in common a failure to respect fundamental norms and values developed over millennia. When greed supersedes concerns about the health of our planet or its inhabitants, when fanatic attachment to ideology is pursued at all costs, and when people suffer human rights violations because they are considered somehow less than equal, the heritage of humanity is betrayed and our future wellbeing is placed in peril.

In confronting these crises, we must address their roots by promoting and defending a shared spirit of human solidarity. On a global level, this can manifest in many ways, from international assistance to political advocacy. And on an individual level, it can take the simple and timeless form of friendship. UN General Assembly decision makes International Organization for Migration part of UN system

25 July 2016 – The United Nations General Assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution approving an agreement to make the International Organization for Migration (IOM) part of the UN system as a related organization.

“Migration is at the heart of the new global political landscape and its social and economic dynamics. At a time of growing levels of migration within and across borders, a closer legal and working relationship between the United Nations and IOM is needed more than ever,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement welcoming the Assembly’s decision. Nelson Mandela International Day Commemorated in Dhaka

01 Dhaka, Monday, 18 July 2016: In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, UNIC Dhaka and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) jointly organized a Poster Exhibition, Video show and Interactive Discussion Programme at the UNIC Library. Edward Rees, Peace & Development Adviser of UN Resident Coordinators Office, Pem Chuki Wangdi, Head of the UNRC Office and Aaqib Md Shatil, Representative of UNYSAB were present and spoke at the event. M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the events. Students from different universities took part in the open discussion and Q/A session to share their views and they pledged to work to create a positive impact in the world which Mandela envisioned. The opening session of the programme began with a Nelson Mandela Photo Exhibition followed by a video show and reading out of UN Secretary General’s Message. The UNSG’s Message on the Day and SDGs promotional materials (Bangla) were distributed among the participants.

Model UN Conference – BANMUN 2016 concludes in Dhaka

Untitled-1Dhaka, Saturday, 16 July 2016: With the collaboration of UNIC Dhaka, UN Youth and Student Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) organized a for-day long Bangladesh Model United Nations (BANMUN 2016) Conference at Adamjee Cantonment College Auditorium during 13 to 16 July 2016. More than 650 delegates from different educational institutions took part in the UN simulation.  The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Honourable MP Advocate Sanjida Khanam as chief guest while M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka spoke as guest of honour.
