Commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day 2015: Cultural Performance by Autistic Children

01Dhaka, 5 April 2015: In observance of World Autism Awareness Day, UNIC Dhaka and Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF) jointly organized a Cultural event with the participation of autistic children at BPF auditorium on 5 April 2015. An art exhibition was also opened at the beginning of the event. In his speech, M. Moniruzzaman, UNIC Officer-in-Charge urged the policy makers and voluntary organizations to come forward with appropriate steps to meet the challenges of the people with autism. The Executive Director of BPF Dr. Shamim Ferdous presided over the function while Kazi Ali Reza, Director (Communication) of Dhaka Ahsania Mission spoke as Chief guest. They focused on various issues of autism disorders and have put emphasis on awareness programme. The autistic children of BPF Inclusive School took part in dance and musical show. Around 200 children, parents, teachers and guests took part in the event.

Tribute to the Language Fighters: International Mother Language Day Observed

01Dhaka, 21 February: In celebration of International Mother Language Day, UNIC Dhaka, UNESCO Bangladesh and Daffodil International University (DIU) jointly organized a seminar, cultural show, drama and exhibition at DIU auditorium on 21 February 2015. UNESCO Representative in Bangladesh Ms. Beatrice Kuldun was the chief guest (represented by PO) while Prof Dr. Lutfar Rahman Vice-Chancellor of DIU presided over the session. The Pro-VC of DIU Prof Dr. Golam Rahman spoke as guest of honour and UNIC Officer-in-Charge M Moniruzzaman delivered a lecture as special guest. Language researcher Prof Dr. Begum Jahan ara of Dhaka University delivered a key-note speech. UNESCO Programme Officer Kizzy Tahnin read-out chief guest’s statement. All the speakers expressed their solidarity to victims of language movement who lost their lives during 1952. A cultural event and drama on mother language movement was staged before the audience. among others university students, young people, activists, media persons and UN officials took part in the programme. Human Rights Based Approach in Policy Formulation Underscores by UN Resident Coordinator, a.i – UNIC Dhaka Celebrates Human Rights Day 2014

1An integrated human rights based approach in policy formulation was underscored by Argentina Matavel Piccin, the UN Resident Coordinator, a.i. in Bangladesh at a seminar organized by United Nations Information Centre  (UNIC Dhaka) jointly with United International University (UIU) and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB). A Poetry Reading session by eminent poets of the country, followed by musical show, was also arranged in the event at UIU Auditorium in the city on 11 December 2014.

In poetry reading session, noted poets of the country – Asad Chowdhury, Ruby Rahman, Shihab Sarkar and Muhammad Samad – echoed the causes of global human rights in their poems.

In her speech, Ms Argentina highlighted the UN Secretary-General and UN Human Rights Commissioners statements for Human Rights Day 2014. She said youth voice needs to be heard and appropriate use of ICT and social media should be ensured. She asked the young participants to go through the Universal Declaration Human Rights. The Vice Chancellor of UIU Prof. Dr. Rezwan Khan presided over the session while UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the session. A ‘vote of thank’ is given by the UNYSAB president Mohammad Mamun Mia.

In celebrating the Day, the youngsters also performed a number of songs in the event. Faculties, media, academics, UN officials and youth groups took part in the event. Youtube: youtube

Make Change Happen, Volunteer! – International Volunteer Day 2014 celebrated in Bangladesh

Untitled-1Several organizations and volunteers in Bangladesh celebrated the International Volunteer Day 2014. The volunteers reiterated their commitment to shape a new world in line with the IVD theme “Make Change Happen, Volunteer!”  To mark the Day, apart from other significant event, UNIC Dhaka, Dhaka Bashi, Hope 87 and National Federation of Youth Organizations in Bangladesh (NFYOB) jointly organized a Rally and Discussion seminar at the Seminar Room of Public Library on 5 December 2014.The discussion session was chaired by President of Dhaka Bashi Md. Sukur Salek and UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman spoke on the occasion as special guest. In his speech, UNIC OIC highlights the role of volunteers especially in difficult situations and how they can they contribute for the wellbeing of community and society. Among others, Dulal Biswas, President of NFYOB, Rezaul Karim Babu, Bangladesh Branch Manager of Hope 87, Suza Mahmud of Betar Bangla and TV artist Dilara Zaman spoke on the occasion. Celebration of 40th Anniversary of Bangladesh’s Membership in the United Nations

Dhaka, 17 September:  In commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations, United Nations Country Team (UNCT) Bangladesh and Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly organized a High level discussion and Exhibition titled 40 Years of Partnership between UN and Bangladesh, at Osmani Memorial Hall on 17 September 2014.  Honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The UN Resident Coordinator spoke on UN-Bangladesh partnership during last 40 years. Honourable Finance Minister Abul Maal A Muhith, MP,  Honourable Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP and Honourable State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Md. Shahriar Alam, MP spoke in the programme.  The former President UN Association of Bangladesh Prof. Salahuddin Ahmed was the key-note speaker. An exhibition – 40 Years of partnership between Bangladesh and UN – was also opened for the visitors where major milestones of UN agencies during the last 40 years were displayed.  Ministers, civil society members, stakeholders and hundreds of visitors visited the historic display booth. In the event, there were cultural programme, cancellation of commemorative stamp and distribution of prizes among the winners of children art contest.  UNIC Dhaka worked as one of Task Force members to organize the events.

Dhaka, 5 June 2014: Highlighting the theme of World Environment Day – Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level – UNIC Dhaka jointly with UNDP Bangladesh and Dept. of Soil, Water and Environment, University of Dhaka commemorated the World Environment Day through an interactive Seminar at Dhaka University RC Majumder Arts Auditorium on 5 June 2014. Mr Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor of UNDP Bangladesh presented the Key-note paper as Chief Guest, while the session was presided over by Prof Dr S M Imamul Huq of Dept of Soil, Water and Environment, Dhaka University. OIC of UNIC Dhaka M. Moniruzzaman delivered a speech focusing on the importance of the Day. He also read-out UN Secretary-General’s Message on the Day and it was distributed along with other publications among the audience. Mohammad Mamun Mia, Research Officer, Democratic Budget Movement also spoke on the occasion. The participating students took part in the open discussion and raised different issues relating to the theme of the Day. They also have put a number of suggestions to UN and Government to protect our environment.

genocideDhaka, 7 April: UNIC Dhaka and University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS) with the cooperation of Daffodil Int’l University commemorated the 20th Anniversary of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide on 7 April at UITS auditorium. The observance included seminar, poetry recitation, drama candlae lighting and poster exhibition. The speakers said genocide destroys the humanity. Poet Kazi Rozi, MP was the chief guest while the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UITS Dr. K M Saiful Islam Khan presided over the function. UN expert and Chairman of CIS, B Kazi Ali Reza delivered a speech as guest of honour while M. Moniruzzaman OIC of UNIC Dhaka spoke as special guest and read-out the UN Secretary General’s message on the Day. Lt Col (Retd) AFM Khairul Basher, who served in Rwanda Peacekeeping Mission from Bangladesh Army, shared his practical working experience in Rwanda. Renowned poets of the country Poet Muhammad Samad (VC of UITS), Poet Kazi Rozi, MP, Poet Shihab Sarkar and Poet Aslam Sani recited poems on human rights. A candle lighting was organized in memory of the victims of Rwanda genocide. A human rights drama was performed by DIU theatre group – All Star Daffodils. A day long poster exhibition was also arranged to mark the Day.

01Dhaka, 7 April 2014: In observance of World Autism Awareness Day, UNIC Dhaka and Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF) jointly organized a seminar, arts/crafts exhibition and cultural function at BPF premises in Dhaka. UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Executive Director of BPF Dr. Shamim Ferdous presided over. A video on ‘autistic spectrum disorder’ was screened before the audience. Bangla translated version of UNSG’s Message on the Day was read-out and distributed among the audience. A cultural function was performed by the autistic children of BPF autistic school. At the beginning, an art/craft exhibition was opened by UNIC OIC. Around 300 autistic children and their parents were present in the programme.

Dhaka, 25 March: UNIC Dhaka, ASA University Bangladesh and Daffodil Int’l University (DIU) jointly commemorated the Int’l Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2014 on 25 March 2014 at ASA University auditorium. The commemoration included Seminar, Candle Lighting, Poetry Recitation, Poster Exhibition and Drama. Prof Shah Alam, Member, Law Commission, Bangladesh was the chief guest while Prof Dalem Chandra Barman, Vice Chancellor of ASA University presided over the function. Mijanur Rahaman Raju, Head, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication of DIU, Kazi Ali Reza, Chairman of CIS,B, M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge, UNIC Dhaka and poet Kazi Rozi, MP spoke as special guests. Renowned poets of the country Kazi Rozi, Shihab Sarkar, Muhammad Samad, Aslam Sani and Prakitoj Shamim Rumi Titon recited human rights poems. Candle lighting was organized in memory of the slave-trade victims. A human rights drama was also staged by ‘All Star Daffodils’ – a theatre group of Daffodil Int’l University. A day long poster exhibition was also arranged to mark the Day. More than 200 teacher and student participated in the programme.

“Equality for women means progress for all” – Seminar and Open Speech Contest on Int’l Women’s Day, 9 March 2014

Dhaka, 9 March: In order to create awareness among the young people about achieving of women equalty, UNIC Dhaka, United Nations Youth and Student Association Bangladesh (UNYSAB) and Dhaka University Model United Nations Association jointly organized a discussion and extemporary speech contest on Int’l Women’s Day on 9 March 2014 at UNIC library. Partnerships Officer of UNRC Office Ms Danielle Naranzilla was the chief guest while UNIC KMO M. Moniruzzaman moderated the programme. He delivered an introductory speech and read-out UN SG’s translated Bangla Message on the Day. Mr. Mamun Mia President of UNYSAB spoke on the occasion as a special guest. The contestants focused on the issues of domestic violence, women’s equality, women’s empowerment and progress for all. A panel of judges selected best four speakers. Prizes were distributed among the winners. Roses were given to all the participants, guests and supporting staff as a souvenir of Int’l Women’s Day.
