Chittagong, Wednesday, 5 October 2016: Aiming to engage young people in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UNIC Dhaka jointly with Chittagong Independent University (CIU) organized a seminar on Sustainable Development Goals at CIU conference room on 5 October 2016. The key-note paper was presented by M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka. Dr. Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong Independent University spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Muhammad Nurul Islam, Founder of Nippon Academy and Honorary Consul-General of Japan was special guest. The UNIC OIC in his deliberation highlighted on the 17 sustainable development goals and 169 associated targets which were adopted by UN members countries in September 2015. Faculties, officials and students took part in the question/answer during open discussion. A video on UN humanitarian activities was screened before the audience. Each of the students was provided with UN publications including SDGs Bangla postcards.
Rajshahi, Thursday, 29 September 2016: With the partnership of UNIC Dhaka, UN Youth and Student Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) organized a four-day long Model UN Conference 2016 in Rajshahi University during 29 Sep to 2 Oct 2016. More than 300 delegates from different educational institutions took part in the UN simulation. The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Md Mizanur Rahman, Associate Professor and Student Adviser of Rajshahi University, M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka and former Student Adviser Prof Md. Sadequl Arephin Matin while UNYSAB President Mamun Mia chaired the session. Rajshahi, 29 September 2016: UNIC Dhaka organized a seminar, as part of nation-wide SDGs campaign, at Govt PN Girls’ High School in Rajshahi district on 29 September 2016. More than 100 students took part in the discussion and Q/A session. The key-note speech was delivered by UNIC National Information Officer & OIC M. Moniruzzaman while Ms Shahara Khanom, Headmistress of the School presided over the seminar. UNIC OIC spoke on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by UN member states and elaborated each goals with backround information. The Bangla translated postcards with 17 goals were distributed among all the participants. The participants have completed a questionnaire with their feedback and opinion about the event.
“Public engagement is a critical part in popularizing and branding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national level, and participation of young people also needs to be ensured in implementing the SDGs process”, UNIC Officer-in-Charge M Moniruzzaman said during the launch of SDGs campaign in Dhaka University campus on 16 August 2016. Prof. AAMS Arefin Siddique, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka inaugurated the launching event at his conference room. The VC highlighted the role of United Nations in supporting the development process of Bangladesh, especially, he remembered the contribution of a number of UN agencies during and after the liberation war of Bangladesh.
The VC said, Bangladesh did very well in achieving MDGs and hoped that this trend will continue for the implementation of SDGs. The long-term SDGs campaign in DU will be carried-out by Dhaka University Model United Nations Association (DUMUNA) in collaboration with UNIC Dhaka. DUMUNA Moderator Professor Delwar Hossain (Dept. of IR) also spoke in the launching and extended his full support in it. Students of different departments affiliated with DUMUNA participated in the programme.
Dhaka, Monday, 18 July 2016: In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, UNIC Dhaka and United Nations Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh (UNYSAB) jointly organized a Poster Exhibition, Video show and Interactive Discussion Programme at the UNIC Library. Edward Rees, Peace & Development Adviser of UN Resident Coordinators Office, Pem Chuki Wangdi, Head of the UNRC Office and Aaqib Md Shatil, Representative of UNYSAB were present and spoke at the event. M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the events. Students from different universities took part in the open discussion and Q/A session to share their views and they pledged to work to create a positive impact in the world which Mandela envisioned. The opening session of the programme began with a Nelson Mandela Photo Exhibition followed by a video show and reading out of UN Secretary General’s Message. The UNSG’s Message on the Day and SDGs promotional materials (Bangla) were distributed among the participants.

Dhaka, 28 April 2016: The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Dhaka and UNRC Office, with support of UNESCAP, launched the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2016 with an event held on 28 April 2016 at IDB Bhaban Conference Room, Dhaka.
With the theme of ‘Nurturing Productivity for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable development’ the launch featured a presentation by Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) highlighting the global and domestic scenario of economic and social situation. Dr Shuvojit Banerjee, Economic Affairs Officer of ESCAP Bangkok presented the salient feature of the survey report in the regional perspectives. Robert D. Dhaka, 7 April 2016: UNIC Dhaka jointly with Daffodil International University (DIU) commemorated the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda on 7 April at DIU auditorium. In expressing solidarity to the victims of Rwanda genocide, the programme began with candle lighting. The observance also included seminar, poetry recitation and a short play. The speakers called the societies to raise voice against the act of genocide. They cited the history of liberation war of Bangladesh and paid tribute to the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for motherland. Prof. Dr. Md. Dhaka, 26 November 2015: UNIC Dhaka and Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) jointly organized a day-long workshop under the banner of UN Library Network on 26 November 2015 at IUB Auditorium. A Key-note paper on ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and COP21’ was delivered by M. Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development, UNDP Bangladesh. Another presentation on ‘Impact of ICT in library and information services’ was given by Dr. Mahady Hasan, Head of the Department of Computer Science, School of Engineering and Computer Science, IUB. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Shahriar Khan, Professor and Dean of School of Engineering and Computer Science of IUB as chief guest while M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the workshop. Hossam Haider Chowdhury, Librarian, IUB also spoke on the occasion. A ‘Talk on SDG and Research4 Life’ was delivered by Dr. M. Nazim Uddin, Senior Manager and Head, ICDDR,B Library. Dhaka, 12 August 2015: In celebration of International Youth Day 2015, UNIC Dhaka jointly with Dhakabashi, Hope 87 and National Youth Federation of Bangladesh organized a discussion meeing and rally respectively at TSC seminar room and Dhaka University campus. The Pro-vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof. Dr. Shahid Akhter Hussein graced the occasion as Chief Guest while UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman spoke as special guest. UN Secretary-General’s Message on the Day and Youth Day poster with Elyx in action were distributed among all the participants. A colourful rally with the participation of young people moved around Dhaka University campus. Among others President of Dhakabashi Mr Sukur Salek, President of National Youth Federation of Bangladesh Mr Dulal Biswas, Treasurer of Dhaka University Syed Rezaur Rahman, Representative of Hope 87 Ms. Caroline Jackl and Journalist Ms Shireen sultana spoke in the discussion session.
