ESCAP Economic and Social Survey 2016 launches in Dhaka

Launching of ESCAP Economic and Social Survey 2016 in Dhaka. Photo/UNIC DhakaDhaka, 28 April 2016: The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Dhaka and UNRC Office, with support of UNESCAP, launched the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2016 with an event held on 28 April 2016 at IDB Bhaban Conference Room, Dhaka.

With the theme of ‘Nurturing Productivity for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable development’ the launch featured a presentation by Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) highlighting the global and domestic scenario of economic and social situation. Dr Shuvojit Banerjee, Economic Affairs Officer of ESCAP Bangkok presented the salient feature of the survey report in the regional perspectives. Robert D. Watkins, the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh presided over the launch event and delivered a statement on the survey. Continue reading

UNIC Dhaka Commemorates Rwanda Genocide Day: Candle lighting, Play, Poetry Recitation and Seminar

Photo: UNIC DhakaDhaka, 7 April 2016: UNIC Dhaka jointly with Daffodil International University (DIU) commemorated the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda on 7 April at DIU auditorium. In expressing solidarity to the victims of Rwanda genocide, the programme began with candle lighting. The observance also included seminar, poetry recitation and a short play. The speakers called the societies to raise voice against the act of genocide. They cited the history of liberation war of Bangladesh and paid tribute to the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for motherland.  Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Rahman, Chief Information Commissioner, Bangladesh spoke on the occasion as chief guest while VC of DIU Prof. Dr. Yusuf M. Islam presided over. UNIC Dhaka and IUB jointly organized Workshop for UN Library Network

Photo: UNIC DhakaDhaka, 26 November 2015: UNIC Dhaka and Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) jointly organized a day-long workshop under the banner of UN Library Network on 26 November 2015 at IUB Auditorium. A Key-note paper on ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and COP21’ was delivered by M. Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development, UNDP Bangladesh. Another presentation on ‘Impact of ICT in library and information services’ was given by Dr. Mahady Hasan, Head of the Department of Computer Science, School of Engineering and Computer Science, IUB. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Shahriar Khan, Professor and Dean of School of Engineering and Computer Science of IUB as chief guest while M. Moniruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of UNIC Dhaka moderated the workshop. Hossam Haider Chowdhury, Librarian, IUB also spoke on the occasion. A ‘Talk on SDG and Research4 Life’ was delivered by Dr. M. Nazim Uddin, Senior Manager and Head, ICDDR,B Library. Around forty library and information professionals from public, private, NGOs, academic and international institutions took part in the workshop.

Celebration of International Youth Day – 2015 in Dhaka

International Youth Day RallyDhaka, 12 August 2015: In celebration of International Youth Day 2015, UNIC Dhaka jointly with Dhakabashi, Hope 87 and National Youth Federation of Bangladesh organized a discussion meeing and rally respectively at TSC seminar room and Dhaka University campus. The Pro-vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof. Dr. Shahid Akhter Hussein graced the occasion as Chief Guest while UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman spoke as special guest. UN Secretary-General’s Message on the Day and Youth Day poster with Elyx in action were distributed among all the participants. A colourful rally with the participation of young people moved around Dhaka University campus. Among others President of Dhakabashi Mr Sukur Salek, President of National Youth Federation of Bangladesh Mr Dulal Biswas, Treasurer of Dhaka University Syed Rezaur Rahman, Representative of Hope 87 Ms. Caroline Jackl and Journalist Ms Shireen sultana spoke in the discussion session. The youngsters also took part in discussion and shared their experience in voluntary activities, they also expressed their interest in Elyx campaign.

Round-table on SDGs and launching of MDGs Report 2015

Launch of MDGs Report 2015In global launching of the Millennium Development Goals Report 2015, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Dhaka organized a round-table discussion with the participation of young representatives form eight universities to talk about eight millennium goals (MDGs) and post-2015 development agenda (SDGs). The development and governance activist Dr. Zahurul Alam spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Kazi Ali Reza, Director (communication) of Dhaka Ahsania Mission presided over. UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the round-table and shared the salient features of the report where there are significant improvements in various goals during the last fifteen years globally including Bangladesh. First International Day of Yoga celebrated in Bangladesh

Yoga DemonstrationDhaka, 21 June 2015: In association of UN System in Bangladesh and Bangladesh Yoga Association, the first ever Int’l Day of Yoga was organized by Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre on 21 June 2015 at National Museum Main Auditorium in Dhaka . Dr Gowher Rizvi, the Int’l Affairs Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister graced the occasion as chief guest while UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Mr Robert Watkins and Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Mr Pankaj Saran spoke as special guests. A live yoga demonstration was organized with the participation of yoga students. A video on Yoga was also screened before the audience and a photo exhibition was arranged at the national museum premises. More than six hundred audiences took part in the event. On 11 December 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to mark the Int’l Day of Yoga on 21 June every year. Video in you tube

Seminar on UN 70th Anniversary and SDGs at CUET

UN 70th Anniversary logo_English_CMYKChittagong, 15 June 2015: To commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations and to sensatize the UN summits scheduled in 2015, UNIC Dhaka with the partnership of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Nippon Academy organized a seminar on 15 June at CUET auditorium. The Vice-Chancellor of CUET Prof Dr Jahangir Alam spoke on the ocassion as chief guest while the key-note paper was pressented by UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman. Among others, the Honorary Consul-General of Japan Embassy Mr. M. Nurul Islam, Pro Vice Chancellor and Registrar of CUET spoke in the seminar. Around one hundred students of CUET attended the seminar and few of them took part in Q/A session. 2015-Time-for-Global-Action_English-e1429068948937The event was mainly focused on September Summit in New York for shaping SDGs, July Conference on Financing for Development (FfD) in Addis Ababa and COP21 in Paris during Nov-Dec 2015. The objectives and impact of those summit were also discussed in the seminar. Issues like sustainable development, climate change in Bangladesh and how Bangladeshi young people can contribute in those matters, also came-up in the discussion. Another seminar on UN 70 and SDGs was organized at Nippon academy on 14 June 2015.

Protect Environment and Reduce Carbon Emission, Commitments made in World Environment Day Round-table

01Dhaka, 8 June 2015: In commemoration of World Environment Day, UNIC Dhaka with the partnership of UN Youth and Students Association of Bangladesh organized a round-table seminar on 8 June 2015 at UNIC Meeting Room. Mr. Mahmud Hasan, Joint Secretary, MoLWA of Bangladesh Government graced the seminar as chief guest. The MDGs and post-2015 development agenda were main focus in the discussion. Key-note papers were presented by Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development of UNDP and Zaki Uz Zaman, Head of UNIDO in Bangladesh. Mamun Mia, President of UNYSAB and journalist Mohiuddin Kawsar took part in the discussion. The participants made a number of commitments to protect environment and to reduce carbon emission. UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the round table under the banner of UN 70th Anniversary and 2015: time for Global Action. The participants include government officials, media, UN agency officials, and university students who took part in Q/A session. An UN Video was screened and Bangla translated message of UN Secretary-General’s was distributed among the participants.

Commemoration of International Day of UN Peacekeepers in Bangladesh

Hon'ble Prime Minister hands over gift to injured peacekeepersDhaka, 31 May 2015: In commemoration of International Day of UN Peacekeepers, an event was organized by Armed Forces Division, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on 31 May 2015. The deceased and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers were honoured in the event. Sheikh Hasina, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh spoke on the occasion as chief guest and handed over the crest and gifts to the family members of deceased peacekeepers and to the injured peacekeepers. The Hon’ble Minister for Foreign Affairs, chiefs of three services, Foreign Secretary, acting chief of Police and senior military officials were in the podium during the ceremony. The UN Resident Coordinator Robert Watkins delivered introductory speech. More than 1,500 participants including Armed Forces, Police and Civil officials,  Ministers, MPs, Academicians, civil society members, UN Country Team and diplomats participated in the event. A Peace Run was also organized in the morning with the participation of armed forces, MoFA and UN officials where Hon’ble Foreign Minister was chief guest and UN Resident Coordinator spoke as special guest. Commemoration of International Day of Families

FD02Dhaka, 16 May 2015: In commemoration of the International Day of Families, UNIC Dhaka, Worldwide Family Love Movement (WWFLM), Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and Dhrubotara Social and Cultural Organization jointly organized a seminar on 16 May 2015 at DAM Auditorium in Dhaka. Mr Md Tariqul Islam, Secretary of Ministry of Social Welfare spoke on the occasion as chief guest while Dr. M. Ehsanur Rahman the Executive Director of Dhaka Ahsania Mission presided over. The special guests were the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Public Administration and UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman. Among others, Ms. Tajkera Khair, the Chairperson of WWFLM and Mr Amia Prapan Chakraborty, the Executive Director of Dhrubotara spoke on the occasion. In their speech, the speakers focused on contemporary issues of family life and the role of family members in building a peaceful society. The UN Secretary-General’s message on the Day was readout. More than 100 persons form diffecrent sectors attended the event.
